CHAPTER ELEVEN

11

David closed the door and walked straight to the kettle. His chest tightened with anger, his blood heated with discord as he made himself kaffe. He knew that his bruder was aware that he already had their father’s bible.

David wasn’t a fool; it was clear as day that the only reason for John’s visit was to make it more than apparent that he was courting Mary King. As was Amish custom, another mann was not to court a girl while she was courting another. Even though no promises had been made, it was an unspoken agreement that, unless both parties agreed that their courtship had ended, no one else was to interfere.

How David wanted to interfere right now. He wanted nothing more than to walk to that buggy and to ask Mary why she was riding with his bruder instead of with him. But he had held his temper; he had bitten down on his tongue to keep the anger from spewing from his lips.

He carried the cup of coffee to the sofa in the living room and sat down. His eye caught on his father’s bible on the small shelf, and he reached for it. The only place he knew he would find solace now was in Gott’s word.

As always, David didn’t open the bible to a specific book or scripture. He let the bible fall open onto the page he believed Gott wanted him to read.

He opened the bible and the pages revealed the book of Proverbs. Many times David would lay at night reading the words of wise men, reading the scriptures that he used as guidance in many challenges.

Today, more than ever before, David knew it was Gott’s will for him to read Proverbs. His eye fell on a piece of scripture he had never seen before.
